The Acronym CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate. CASA volunteers are trained by local program directors and appointed by the court to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children.
CASA is a child advocacy program that began in the mid 70’s with a Seattle judge’s vision. The concept he developed was so successful it soon expanded across the country and now there are nearly 950 state and local programs in the United States.
National CASA provides local programs with training opportunities for staff and volunteers, a standardized volunteer training curriculum and many other support services. Flathead Valley CASA for Kids is accredited through the National CASA organization.
"As Chairman of the National Commission of Children, I have observed judges in juvenile courts with a mere 10 to 15 minutes to decide whether a child should remain in a distressed family or placed in foster care. With growing caseloads, it’s increasingly difficult for the courts and social workers to make the system work for families and children. This is why CASA volunteers are so essential. They provide valuable information and insight about individual children. CASA deserves our deep admiration and support."
